Ex-Liverpool ace dubbed ‘world class’ by Jürgen Klopp has ‘reached next level’ since $15m exit

Harry Wilson made just two first-team appearances for Liverpool before he completed a £12 million move to Fulham in 2021 and the Wales international has now opened up on his decision to leave Anfield

Ex-Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson believes his game has reached a “new level” since leaving Anfield. Wilson, who started with Liverpool’s Under-9s team, rose through the ranks in the academy sides and made his debut for the club in the FA Cup in 2017.

The Wales international had successful loan periods at Derby County, Hull City and Bournemouth and had been tipped for a role in the first-team by Jürgen Klopp. Speaking in 2019, Klopp told The Guardian: “Of course he can succeed here. We loaned him so he can make the steps.

“His shooting is world-class. Find me five players who shoot better than him, that is obvious, but the game is about more and that is what he has to improve and that is clear.”

But he only made one further appearance for the Reds and having initially joining on loan, Wilson made a permanent $15m (£12m/€14m) switch to Fulham in 2022. Since his move to west London, Wilson has netted 18 goals and provided 34 assists in 111 games for Fulham.

Wilson believes he made the right choice in leaving Liverpool and admits the competition for places in Klopp’s attack stopped him from securing a regular starting position. He told BBC Sport: “I feel I have moved to the next level. The move to Fulham two and a half years ago now was a big one for me.

“I’d been on a lot of loans from Liverpool. Although my dream as a young lad was to make it into Liverpool’s first team and play regularly, I knew that wasn’t going to be the case. “When I was 18, 19 and 20, I was trying to get into the team, but Liverpool had arguably the best front three in the world.

“So all the loans I went on really helped me to grow as a player and learn the game. It got to a stage in my life where I wanted to get settled from a personal side of things as well. So when the Fulham move came up, I spoke to Marco Silva on the phone and I just felt it was the right move.”
