It HAS to change!’ – Carragher admits one big problem will cost Reds in title race

Liverpool’s faltering attack has been pinpointed as the main reason behind the Reds’ slump in the Premier League title race.

The Anfield side are top of the list for expected goals (xG) with 74.7 but have only managed 72. Meanwhile, champions Manchester City have rattled in 76 on the back of an xG tally of 68.3.

Liverpool have scored fewer goals than both Arsenal and City and only managed three more than Newcastle United, whose xG tally stands at 62.2.

On Sunday, Jurgen Klopp’s side again drew a blank despite an xG of 2.81 in their game against Crystal Palace.

Eberechi Eze scored the only goal of the game at Anfield as Oliver Glasner’s side upset the Reds and derailed their bid for a second title under Klopp.

Coming in for particular criticism in recent weeks has been Darwin Nunez, who spurned more golden opportunities at the weekend.

The Uruguayan hitman has managed 11 league goals this season but that comes against an xG of 18.29, meaning he is significantly underperforming in front of goal.

The 24-year-old has missed 25 so-called big chances in the Premier League this term, behind only Erling Haaland who has 30 on his record.

Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, has missed 13 big chances.

If Liverpool are going to reassemble their title bid and send Klopp off on a high then they are going to have to sort out their finishing over the last six games of the season.

That’s a point made by Jamie Carragher in his analysis of the Reds’ loss to Palace during the Sky Sports show Monday Night Football.

The Champions League-winning former defender admits concerns over Liverpool’s goalscoring issues and insists that something must be done to correct the team’s misfiring forwards sooner rather than later.

“It has to change,” he said. “I think Liverpool’s xG in this run is around nine and they have scored two which is not great.

“For it to finish like that and go like that right now at the most pivotal of times is a huge problem for them.

“There is still time to fix that and get it back, but the nature of the players, it will always be a little bit like that in terms of the numbers we are looking at and the type of players that they are.

“But, that has to change very quickly if Liverpool are to get back in the title race.”
