The Philadelphia Phillies may have acquired Luis Arraez at the trade deadline without necessarily addressing their biggest positional need, but the move could ultimately prove to be one of the most important additions of their season.
Philadelphia entered the deadline looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder. Instead, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski brought in Arraez, a left-handed-hitting infielder whose biggest strength is making consistent contact and finding ways to reach base.
At first, the move did not look particularly promising.
Arraez endured a difficult start to his Phillies career, going 0-for-17 at the plate and raising questions about whether the three-time batting champion would quickly rediscover his form in Philadelphia. However, that early slump now looks like a distant memory.
Arraez has recently begun looking much more like the hitter the Phillies expected to acquire, and his resurgence has put him in position to chase an extraordinary piece of MLB history.
ARRAEZ COULD MAKE HISTORY WITH FOURTH BATTING TITLE
Arraez has already accomplished something very few hitters in modern baseball can claim. He has won three batting titles in three consecutive seasons, doing so with three different organizations.
He won his first batting title with the Minnesota Twins in 2022 before leading the National League with the Miami Marlins in 2023. That 2023 season was particularly impressive, as Arraez finished with a .354 batting average and became one of baseball’s most difficult hitters to retire.
He then won another batting title with the San Diego Padres in 2024.
Now, with the Phillies, Arraez has an opportunity to take that remarkable accomplishment to another level.
According to SleeperMLB on X, if Arraez wins the batting title again this season, he would become the first player in MLB history to win a batting championship with four different franchises.
That possibility makes his current chase even more fascinating.
Entering play on Aug. 25, Arraez owns a .321 batting average, which ranks first in all of Major League Baseball. He currently sits just ahead of Houston Astros star Yordan Alvarez, who is hitting .320 and leading the American League.
In the National League, Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Nick Gonzales is second at .308.
That gives Arraez a 13-point advantage over Gonzales as the regular season enters its final stretch. There is still plenty of baseball remaining, meaning the race can change quickly, but Arraez has positioned himself extremely well.
ARRAEZ HAS TURNED HIS SEASON AROUND
The most encouraging part for Philadelphia is that Arraez is not simply benefiting from the strong numbers he accumulated before arriving with the Phillies.
He has begun producing at a high level for his new team after struggling initially.
Following his 0-for-17 start, Arraez has recorded at least one hit in 10 consecutive games that he has started. His only hitless appearance during that span came on Aug. 23, when he entered as a pinch-hitter for Bryson Stott in the eighth inning.
During that stretch, the Phillies have gone 9-2, while Arraez has hit an impressive .405.
He has gone 17-for-42 during those games, collecting three doubles and one home run. Even more importantly, he has continued to demonstrate the elite contact ability that has defined his career.
Arraez has struck out just once during that stretch while drawing one walk.
That type of production is exactly what the Phillies hoped they would get when they acquired him.
PHILLIES NEED ARRAEZ’S CONSISTENCY
Philadelphia’s offense desperately needed another player capable of consistently putting the ball in play and reaching base.
The Phillies had struggled near the bottom of Major League Baseball in on-base percentage, making Arraez’s skill set particularly valuable. He does not rely on overwhelming power to impact games. Instead, he puts pressure on opposing pitchers by making contact, extending at-bats and finding ways to get on base.
His batting average with Philadelphia has now climbed to .308, bringing him closer to the .324 mark he posted with the Giants before his difficult stretch at the plate.
If Arraez continues performing at his current level, the Phillies could have one of the most dangerous table-setters in baseball heading into the final weeks of the season.
And there is an even bigger prize waiting for him.
Winning another batting title would not only give Arraez his fourth career championship in the category. It would also place him in a unique position in MLB history, as he would become the first player to win batting titles with four different franchises.
For a Phillies team fighting to make noise in the postseason, Arraez’s resurgence could not have come at a better time.
What initially appeared to be an unusual trade deadline acquisition is quickly looking like a potentially historic one.
Now, Arraez has the opportunity to finish the season by doing something no player before him has ever accomplished.
