Virgil van Dijk is about to enter the last 12 months of his current Liverpool contract and admits there have been NO TALKS about a new one.
The 32-year-old defender sees his terms expire in 2025 alongside another high-profile duo in Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold but negotiations appear at a standstill for all three Liverpool superstars.
Van Dijk, the club captain, has been rumoured to be a transfer target for Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and money-bags Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Qadsiah with this summer representing the club’s last chance to cash in should they choose to do so.
Liverpool are starting the post-Jurgen Klopp era with Richard Hughes coming in as sporting director and Arne Slot acting as new head coach.
Given the scale of the Anfield rebuild over the course of the last few weeks and months, Van Dijk admits contract talks have not been a priority, but added that he expects to be working with his compatriot Slot next season.
VAN DIJK ADMITS NO NEW CONTRACT TALKS
He was speaking to media in the Netherlands after joining up with the Dutch squad ahead of the European Championship this summer.
“A new contract hasn’t yet been discussed,” Van Dijk told De Telegraaf.
“That isn’t surprising, because the club was completely busy with the new trainer, the staff and everything.
“Then it doesn’t make sense to start working with players. You can always talk and we will see how that will go.
There have been conversations between Slot and Van Dijk, with the centre back determined to play his part in Liverpool’s transition next season.
“I didn’t feel like this was a farewell conversation and I think he also sees me in Liverpool 2.0,” he said.
“I got the feeling that he’s happy that I’m still there and will be there next season, so that I can help him where necessary. This allows us to achieve success on the field.”
