Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has reflected on his failed moved to Chelsea in 2005 and the relationship he had with their Portuguese coach
Steven Gerrard ‘regrets’ not playing for Jose Mourinho.
The former Liverpool captain explained his feelings claiming he has had a ‘distant relationship’ with the Portuguese for many years.
“I love the manager, I love the man. I’ve had a distant relationship with him for many many years. But, I have regrets for not playing for the man and the coach because I know he would’ve made me a better player. I know we would’ve added more trophies to what I’ve already won,” he told Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE.
Gerrard was touted as the final touch to Mourinho’s midfield in 2005 after Liverpool’s historic UEFA Champions League triumph in Istanbul. However, no such move materialised despite heavy speculation. Gerrard would have bolstered the already strong midfield of Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Claude Makelele.
“But, looking back now, I have no regrets not signing for Chelsea, I don’t regret not signing for Chelsea at all. I’m happy with the decision I made.”
Despite ultimately missing out on the Premier League, Gerrard will forever have a deep connection with Liverpool Football Club widely regarded as one their best players of all time. After the transfer saga, the former captain continued to be the driving force of Liverpool’s late 2000s to early 2010s.
