The third-seeded Bat Cats punched their ticket to the second round of the Morgantown Regional on Friday, outlasting second-seeded Wake Forest in a thrilling 6-5 contest. The victory not only kept Kentucky unbeaten in the regional but also allowed the Wildcats to avoid the pressure of the losers’ bracket, putting them in a strong position moving forward.
Things did not start well for Kentucky. Wake Forest jumped out to a 3-0 lead, putting the Wildcats on their heels early. However, Kentucky responded with the resilience that has defined much of its season. The Wildcats chipped away at the deficit before stringing together enough offense to seize a 5-3 advantage, swinging momentum firmly in their favor.
Wake Forest refused to go away quietly. The Demon Deacons answered Kentucky’s surge and eventually tied the game at 5-5, setting up a tense finish between two teams fighting to remain in the winner’s bracket. With the game hanging in the balance, Kentucky turned to one of its most reliable playmakers.
Junior outfielder Jayce Tharnish delivered when it mattered most in the ninth inning. Tharnish ignited the decisive rally by reaching base and putting pressure on Wake Forest’s defense with his speed and aggressiveness on the basepaths. His efforts ultimately led to the go-ahead run, giving Kentucky a 6-5 lead and putting the Wildcats three outs away from a crucial postseason victory.
Kentucky’s pitching staff then shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, preserving the one-run advantage and completing the comeback win. The result was one of the Wildcats’ most important victories of the season, as it moved them into the regional winner’s bracket and left them just two wins away from advancing to the Super Regional round.
The victory also showcased Kentucky’s toughness. Rather than folding after the early deficit or after Wake Forest erased the Wildcats’ lead, Nick Mingione’s club continued to battle and found a way to make the winning plays late in the game. That resilience will be tested again as Kentucky prepares for a showdown with top-seeded West Virginia, which advanced with a convincing 10-1 victory over Binghamton.
With momentum on its side and a spot in the winner’s bracket secured, Kentucky now turns its attention to a high-stakes matchup against the host Mountaineers, with a chance to move one step closer to another Super Regional appearance.
Later in the day, host school and top-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers Baseball made a statement with a dominant 10-1 victory over fourth-seeded Binghamton Bearcats Baseball. The Mountaineers controlled the game from the outset, overwhelming Binghamton on both sides of the ball to cruise into the winner’s bracket.
The result sets up one of the marquee matchups of the Morgantown Regional, as West Virginia will face Kentucky Wildcats Baseball on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. ET. The winner will move within one victory of advancing to the Super Regionals, while the loser will be forced into an elimination game and a much tougher path through the bracket.
A television designation had not yet been announced, though the game is expected to air on one of ESPN’s networks given the significance of the matchup and the strong fan interest surrounding both programs.
For Kentucky, the stakes could not be much higher. After surviving Wake Forest in dramatic fashion, the Wildcats have positioned themselves well, but there is still work to do. Kentucky needs at least two more victories to capture the regional title and advance to the Super Regionals for only the fourth time in program history. Reaching that stage would mark another significant achievement for head coach Nick Mingione’s program, which has emerged as one of the SEC’s most consistent postseason contenders in recent years.
Saturday’s showdown will pit Kentucky’s momentum and resilience against a West Virginia team that enters the contest riding the confidence of a convincing opening-round victory on its home field. With a spot in the regional final at stake, both teams will be looking to take a major step toward Omaha and the College World Series.
