Nunez opened the scoring in fortuitous circumstances when he charged down Ivo Grbic’s attempted clearance, but a Conor Bradley own goal brought the visitors level just before the hour mark.

It took a Mac Allister thunderbolt to restore Liverpool’s lead, before Gakpo headed in a late third to wrap up the win and send his side back to the top of the standings.

The previous record was actually set by Liverpool almost two years ago, when they had 83 per cent of the ball during a 2-0 win against city rivals Everton in April 2022.
Manchester City also clocked the previous record of 83 per cent when they beat Swansea City 5-0 in April 2018.

Liverpool now lead the Premier League title race with 70 points with eight games left to play.
Arsenal are in second position with 68 points after they beat Luton Town 2-0 on Wednesday, while Man City are third with 67 after defeating Aston Villa 4-1.
