Arne Slot has admitted that next week will be another ‘big’ one for his Liverpool side when they face Newcastle United.
Liverpool, who defeated Champions League holders Real Madrid on Wednesday night, have the chance to move a whopping 11 points clear of Manchester City when the Reds face the faltering champions at Anfield on Sunday. However, Liverpool are not getting carried away by that prospect; defender Andy Robertson said that, whatever happens against Manchester City, ‘we will then fully focus on Newcastle’.That should not come as a surprise. Slot has already hailed Eddie Howe as a ‘very good manager’ and referenced how last season’s dramatic late win under predecessor Jurgen Klopp ‘shows you how difficult it is’ to get a result at St James’ Park.
As crucial a week as this is for Liverpool, it was rather telling that Slot was talking both before and after the win against Real Madrid about the importance of the next one, too.”You know how special it is to play against the club that won this Champions League so many times and the other reigning champions as well,” he told TNT Sports. “They dominated Europe for the last few years, were a pain in the a– for Liverpool many times as well, so we knew it was a big week but I said once this week is over, next week is a big week again with Newcastle and Everton.”
Newcastle, meanwhile, are also focused on the task at hand – a trip to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace on Saturday – as the Magpies look to get back to winning ways following a 2-0 defeat against West Ham.
