Latest Liverpool news as the search for Jürgen Klopp’s successor goes on. The Reds could be pipped to the signing of a talented midfielder, with Arsenal also keen.
Liverpool has made a key appointment as it prepares for life without manager Jürgen Klopp. The Reds have confirmed Richard Hughes as its new sporting director and he will be involved in naming Klopp’s successor, and stepping up summer transfer plans. Liverpool could miss out on a potential target to title rivals Arsenal, while an outside next manager contender has been discussed. Here’s your round-up of the latest Liverpool news.
Murphy plays down Southgate option
Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has dismissed a suggestion that Gareth Southgate could take over from Jürgen Klopp this summer. Xabi Alonso remains the frontrunner to replace Klopp but Liverpool will face a battle with Bayern Munich for his services.
The likes of Roberto De Zerbi and Rúben Amorim have emerged as potential alternatives, should Liverpool fail to appoint its former midfielder. Meanwhile, England boss Southgate has been reportedly identified by Manchester United as a top target to replace Erik ten Hag, if he is sacked this summer.
According to The Mail, United is confident of luring Southgate to Old Trafford, with his England contract set to expire after the European Championships, and not expected to be renewed regardless of performances on the pitch. He has not been linked with the Liverpool post but Murphy was asked on talkSPORT if he would take him at Anfield.
He said: “It depends on what the other options were. I think Liverpool have got better options than Manchester United, like Alonso. Yeah, he’s a better option for Liverpool than Southgate,”
Zubimendi picks ideal destination?
Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi would reportedly prefer a move to Arsenal over Liverpool this summer. The 25-year-old has been in fine form this season and has attracted interest from a host of clubs.
Liverpool is believed to be keeping tabs on him with Zubimendi having previously worked with potential next manager Xabi Alonso. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is also a big fan, with the midfielder having a $66m (£51m/€60m) release clause in his contract.
According to Fichajes, Zubimendi believes the Emirates is a likelier destination at the end of the season, with Arteta set to give the green light to a transfer approach in the coming weeks.
Liverpool did sign four midfielders last summer and is expected to prioritize additions in other areas of the team this summer. Arsenal meanwhile is expected to move for a replacement for Thomas Partey and Zubimendi fits the bill.
