As the offseason transfer portal heats up, Indiana University men’s basketball has made a key move in shoring up its backcourt depth — landing Tayton Conerway, a dynamic guard from Troy University who’s ready to make his mark in the Big Ten.

Conerway, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, announced his commitment to the Hoosiers earlier this week, bringing with him a potent blend of speed, defensive toughness, and offensive upside that has Indiana fans buzzing with anticipation.

“I’m excited to get to work and contribute to a program with such rich history,” Conerway said following his commitment. “I know what I bring to the table, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help the team win.”

A Gritty, Underrated Talent

At Troy, Conerway carved out a reputation as a gritty, high-motor guard who never backed down from a challenge. During the 2023–24 season, he averaged 11.7 points, 3.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game — all while playing aggressive on-ball defense and leading the team in hustle stats.

What stood out most to scouts and coaches, however, was his ability to change pace, find teammates in transition, and guard multiple positions. Though he wasn’t a household name, Conerway was quietly one of the most impactful players in the Sun Belt Conference.

“He plays bigger than his size and brings energy on every possession,” said one scout familiar with his game. “Indiana’s getting a guy who knows how to compete and elevate others.”

How He Fits Into IU’s Plans

With Indiana losing veteran guards to graduation and the draft, head coach Mike Woodson needed someone who could step in immediately and contribute — especially on the defensive end, where the Hoosiers struggled at times last season. Enter Conerway, whose intensity and experience could make him a valuable piece in both starting and rotational roles.

“Tayton brings us toughness, quickness, and a defensive mindset,” Coach Woodson said in a statement. “He’s a competitor, and he knows how to run a team. That’s exactly what we need.”

Offensively, Conerway’s strength lies in slashing to the rim, creating off the dribble, and disrupting passing lanes to create fast-break opportunities. If he can develop a more consistent three-point shot, his ceiling could be even higher than expected.

A Stepping Stone to Something Bigger

For Conerway, transferring to Indiana isn’t just about a change in scenery — it’s a chance to prove he can thrive on the biggest stage. The Big Ten’s physicality and pace of play will test him, but his work ethic and determination suggest he’ll rise to the occasion.

“It’s about showing that I belong,” Conerway said. “I’ve worked hard to get here, and I’m ready for whatever comes next.”

Final Thoughts

In a college basketball landscape shaped increasingly by the transfer portal, Tayton Conerway may be one of the under-the-radar gems who makes a big splash in 2024–25. If his transition goes smoothly, expect him to be a key cog in Indiana’s quest to return to national relevance — and a fan favorite in Bloomington.
