Liverpool are yet to decide on Jurgen Klopp’s successor as manager, but if Xabi Alonso takes the reins then it could be good news for youngster Luke Chambers.
Liverpool’s potential new manager, Xabi Alonso, could block a transfer as his first act after replacing Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool are yet to decide who will take over from Klopp, but if they choose Alonso, it could be good news for young player Luke Chambers.
Liverpool will need a new manager this summer when Klopp ends his nearly nine-year stint at Anfield. Alonso, who won the Champions League with Liverpool as a player, is reportedly being considered for the job along with tRuben Amorim and Julian Nagelsmann.
Alonso is reportedly a fan of Chambers and even tried to sign him for his current club, Bayer Leverkusen. However, Chambers stayed at Anfield and made his senior debut in this season’s Carabao Cup.
Chambers is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic, where he plays regularly for Shaun Maloney’s team in League One. There may be interest in another loan next season, but if Alonso becomes Liverpool’s manager, he might want Chambers to stay at Anfield.
The Mail reports that Alonso and Leverkusen discussed a loan deal for Chambers last summer, but it didn’t happen. Despite this, Leverkusen hasn’t suffered too much.
Leverkusen is doing great this season, staying unbeaten and they’re ahead of Bayern Munich by 10 points with only nine games left. They beat Wolfsburg 2-0 last time out, making it their sixth win in a row.
They could also get to the Europa League quarter-finals if they win against Qarabag on Thursday.
On his replacement, Klopp said: “I really think it is the perfect moment for a new manager and not the wrong one because we didn’t win everything, we left spaces. Go at City after Pep Guardiola and you need to be champion 10 years in a row to achieve the same.
“The people here are different. The people gave Bill Shankly the chance, and what came after Bill Shankly, and they are all bigger than we are, and the people will understand in the end that this was a fantastic time and we all enjoyed it like hell.
“What a ride. But I am 100 per cent sure that what they learned over the years is if we trust and we push then everything is possible. This team will attract top class managers, 100 per cent.
“I came in at the right moment because it got lost a little bit and maybe I was the one who helped everyone to understand again how important it is. The club is special. Not because of the buildings, other clubs have nice stadiums, but because of the people.”
