Ruben Amorim rebuffs rumours he could replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim says he has little interest in discussing his future despite growing links with a summer move to Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp.

The Merseysiders have already begun their search for a new manager after Klopp announced he would be stepping down from the role at the end of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso – who, of course, played for the Reds – has quickly been identified as the clear frontrunner for the job after guiding his side to the top of the Bundesliga table.

However, Liverpool face significant competition for the Spaniard with Bayern Munich, who have decided to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, also keen on their former player.

That has seen Amorim emerge as Liverpool’s preferred back-up option should they miss out on Alonso, with the Portuguese coach currently battling for the title with Sporting.

But when asked about the speculation, Amorim rebuffed any questions regarding his future and insists he is only focused on managing Sporting – though he is expected to consider his options in the summer.

Asked about the rumours linking him to Liverpool, Amorim said: ‘I’m not going to dwell on my future, I’ve already said what I had to say.

‘Every time I talk about it the topic comes up again. I just want to beat Rio Ave [on Sunday night] and then we’ll see.’

Amorim has addressed his future on several occasions this season, having been linked with the Manchester United job when Erik ten Hag was under pressure at the backend of last year.

The 39-year-old was also shortlisted by Chelsea and Tottenham last season before they appointed Mauricio Pochettino and Ange Postecoglou respectively.

Speaking about the Old Trafford links back in November, Amorim said: ‘We don’t know the future, it depends on the results.
