Former Liverpool CEO names unsung hero who deserves Carabao Cup medal

Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore has made a case for Alex Inglethorpe to receive a Carabao Cup winner’s medal for his role in the development of many players who starred at Wembley.

Inglethorpe, the Reds’ Academy director, first joined the club as an under-21s coach in November 2012 and has spent the last decade helping bridge the gap from youth sides to first-team level. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the ultimate example of a player making the journey from various age groups to becoming an integral player at the elite level, with Curtis Jones now following in his footsteps.

Others are now embarking on the same journey and were handed opportunities to shine during Sunday’s remarkable Carabao Cup final victory in the capital. Indeed, the likes of Jayden Danns, Bobby Clark and James McConnell were all introduced during proceedings and played their part in the 1-0 win.

Recognising the role played by Inglethorpe in making this possible, Moore tweeted: “I hope there’s a medal reserved for Alex Inglethorpe. The work that he and his staff have done at the Academy over the past few seasons has been nothing short of amazing.” Moore spent three years working with Inglethorpe between 2017 and 2020 before moving on to a new challenge elsewhere.

Expressing his pride at the overwhelming success of the Liverpool Academy, Inglethorpe told liverpoolfc.com ahead of Sunday’s final: “It has been a really encouraging season for everybody at the Academy with the amount of opportunities our young players have had, and I’ve always said we have a manager and first-team staff who give that opportunity when it’s deserved.
