Rúben Amorim just dropped biggest hint on Sporting future decision amid Liverpool links

Rúben Amorim has spoken out about his future at Sporting CP amid rumours linking him to Liverpool. Following Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season, Amorim has become the favourite to replace Jürgen Klopp.

The 39-year-old was questioned about his future during a press conference ahead of Sporting’s huge title clash with Benfica tomorrow. The game sees first take on second in the Primeira Liga, with Sporting sitting one point ahead of its Lisbon rival ahead of kick-off, albeit with a game in hand.

Amorim will be looking to claim his second league title in charge of the club this season, having won his first back in 2021. Questions over his future are dominating the headlines at the moment though as Liverpool continues its search for a new manager.

When asked whether he could pledge his commitment to staying at Sporting for another season, like Alonso, Amorim simply responded: “No, I can’t guarantee that.”

He went on to discuss his decision-making process for the future, revealing: “Sporting are taking care of their future and I can’t make a decision because I have given my word so I can’t go back on it, which is if we don’t win titles, I will leave the club.

“That has always been very clear since the beginning and it was something I thought was important to tell my players because we have to win. First we’ll win titles then we can decide [the future].

“But that’s not something that concerns me because the future has been planned by the club for some time. We are outlining all the situations and everything we want for next season and that is the main reason as to why I can’t guarantee it.

“Because like I said, I’ve spoken to the players and as a leader I can’t go back on my word. We have to win titles, we are on the right path and we must win this game to do so.”

Asked whether he would leave if a club paid his release clause, he declared: “I don’t want to be talking too much about my future, the focus is on the game. But I can say that I won’t argue or put any pressure on Sporting, I owe the club a lot and what will happen, will happen. But there won’t ever be any pressure from me towards the club because I owe a lot to Sporting.
