Patriots urged to cut ties with $19 million 2-time Super Bowl champion

The New England Patriots have hired Mike Vrabel to help lead Drake Maye to the playoffs. The team could move on from some expensive players who are no longer producing.

While listing players the Patriots should move on from, FanSided’s Michael DeVito urged the Patriots to let Jonathan Jones walk. Jones has been on the Patriots since 2016.

“First is the largest earner in 2024 in the Patriots’ free agent class, nine-year Patriots veteran Jonathan Jones. The team dished out $13M in guarantees to Jones in 2024, but his play did not warrant it. Jones played in all 17 games and had a respectable 58 total stops, six passes defended, and two forced fumbles,” wrote DeVito. “Yet Jones has had no interceptions the past two years and will be entering his year-32 season. It’s undisputable that the $13M on the cap can be used much more effectively at any number of positions, such as wide receiver, left tackle, edge, and defensive tackle. Jones should be allowed to leave.”

Jones signed a two-year, $19 million deal in 2023, and has not done much to be brought back. He is one of the players left from the Bill Belichick era with the Patriots. He won Super Bowl 51 and Super Bowl 53 with the Patriots.

He has made 71 career starts and has 11 interceptions in his career. As the Patriots usher in a new era, they may be willing to move on from the two-time champion.
