The New England Patriots met with Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden at the NFL Scouting Combine, and that meeting consisted of more than just a handshake and a simple exchange of pleasantries.
According to Golden, it was full-go with the Patriots going over route concepts at the wide receiver position.
“They coached me hard,” said Golden, who admitted he liked the coaching that he received from New England.
Could that coaching eventually be on a more permanent basis? It’s a fair question to ask with the Patriots desperately needing a spark at wide receiver and Golden being one of the top prospects at that position. He’s an explosive playmaker capable of unlocking the Patriots’ need for a deep threat.
That could open things up for other players on the roster, including Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Kendrick Bourne.
Golden is projected as a second-round draft pick on Day 2, but there’s a chance a team could reach on him late in the first round. He could potentially be a trade up candidate for the Patriots, who could package the No. 38 pick in a deal to get a crack at two first-round prospects.
It could be a viable emergency plan if the Patriots find themselves left out in the cold again in free agency.
