In perhaps the most entertaining half of basketball through the first two complete games on the day, the Troy Trojans looked to pull off an upset of the third seeded Kentucky Wildcats.
Troy hung in the game throughout the first half, only trailing by eight at the break, 37-25. This lead came courtesy of a late 8-0 Kentucky run.
Kentucky looked to expand on their lead, and improve their all time record against Troy to 2-0. In the first matchup between the two teams, Kentucky won 70-62 back in 2017.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a corner three that pushed their lead to 38-27, and a second three on the next possession extended the lead to 41-28.
Heading into the under 12 minute media timeout, the Wildcats led 50-39, led by Otega Oweh’s 15 ponts and Andrew Carr’s 13 points. Tayton Conerway led the Trojans with 10 points.
Kentucky went on a 14-0 run, holding Troy scoreless for over three minutes, to open the game up and take a 20 point lead (59-39) with just under ten minutes left in the game.
UK remained in control for the rest of the game, winning with a final score of 76-57.
Kentucky will go on to face the winner of Xavier and Illinois on Sunday, with the tipoff time still to be determined.
