Younger brother of a former UK basketball star commits to play in the Big Ten

Myles is now set to be the third Herro brother to play high-major college hoops.

First there was Tyler, who was a one-and-done guard on the 2018-19 Kentucky team. During his lone season in Lexington, Herro averaged 14 points per game and shot 35.5% from 3-point range. Tyler earned 2019 SEC Newcomer of the Year and SEC All-Freshman Team honors for a UK team that reached the Elite Eight. That remains the last UK team to reach the regional finals of March Madness.

Following that season, Tyler was selected 13th overall in the 2019 NBA draft by the Miami Heat, Tyler was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2022 and has been a part of two Miami teams that reached the NBA Finals. He signed a $130 million contract extension with the Heat in October 2022. Tyler — who averaged a career-best 23.9 points per game last season — is under contract with Miami through the 2026-27 season.

In college basketball, Tyler was followed by Austin, a class of 2023 guard who joined South Carolina as a preferred walk-on. Austin redshirted the 2023-24 season with the Gamecocks and was then put on scholarship by South Carolina head coach Lamont Paris prior to the start of last season.

Austin appeared in 10 games last season for South Carolina, which went 12-20 overall and finished last in the SEC regular season standings with a 2-16 mark in conference games.

This offseason, Austin transferred from South Carolina to the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. St. Thomas is a Division I school that plays in the Summit League.

Now, Myles is set to join the college basketball ranks himself.

“Austin and Myles are Tyler’s little brothers. They’d always get compared to Tyler. They’re not Tyler!” their father, Chris, told the Herald-Leader last summer. “They’re their own person. … I keep continuously telling them that ‘You gotta be you,’ and I’ve been doing that for a long time. They’re three different kids.”

During that conversation with the Herald-Leader, Chris Herro also discussed what was important to Myles during his college recruitment.

“He just wants someone to take him for who he is,” Chris said. “Like, ‘This is who I am, and this is what you’re going to get.’ I’m not going to come in and score 30 (points) a night for you in college. If it does happen, it’s because I got better and that’s the situation you put me in. But right now, this is who I am and I want someone to take me for who I am, not Tyler.”

Evidently, Myles found that fit with Ohio State.

Last season, the Buckeyes went 17-15 overall and missed the NCAA Tournament in Jake Diebler’s first season as the full-time head coach. That campaign included a 20-point win over Kentucky in December as part of the CBS Sports Classic in New York City.

“I chose Ohio State because it felt like the right fit for me, both on and off the court,” Myles told On3 of his commitment to Ohio State. “The opportunity to grow in a program like this, compete at a high level, and be part of something special really stood out. Coach Diebler and his staff were real with me from the start. The way they communicate, the vision they have for the program and how much they believe in their players made it easy to trust them.”

There’s also a common thread tying together Myles’ commitment to Ohio State and Tyler’s time at Kentucky.

Current Ohio State associate head coach Joel Justus was an assistant coach at Kentucky for five seasons, including the 2018-19 season when Tyler was in Lexington. Justus also served as a special assistant to the head coach and as the director of analytics at UK, all under former Kentucky coach John Calipari.

Myles is now the sixth newcomer set to join the Ohio State program for next season.

The Buckeyes will bring in Myles and four-star power forward A’mare Bynum as freshmen. From the transfer portal, Diebler has landed Brandon Noel (Wright State), Christoph Tilly (Santa Clara), Joshua Ojianwuna (Baylor) and Gabe Cupps (Indiana).

Noel had 20 points and eight rebounds for Wright State in a Nov. 4 loss at Kentucky, which marked the first regular season game of the Mark Pope coaching era at UK.
