Coach Joanne P. McCallie on the 2013 Undefeated Home Season

“That 2012–2013 team was special. I’ve coached a lot of great players and great teams, but what those young women accomplished — especially at home — was extraordinary. Cameron Indoor became a symbol of our grit, our toughness, and our unity. We didn’t just defend our court — we owned it. Game after game, our players walked in with a mentality that no one was going to outwork or outfight us in our house.

“Chelsea Gray, before her injury, was one of the best leaders I’ve ever seen on the floor — her vision, her poise, her courage. And when we lost her, others didn’t flinch. Tricia Liston’s shooting, Elizabeth Williams’ dominance, Haley Peters’ toughness — everyone elevated. That’s what great teams do.

“Going undefeated at home wasn’t just about talent. It was about heart. It was about pride. Every time we walked into that arena, we were reminded of the Duke legacy — and we wanted to carve our own. And I believe we did.

“I still get chills thinking about that Maryland game… the way the crowd roared, the way our bench exploded, the unity of that moment. It was a turning point, not just for the season but for the program’s national presence.

“More than anything, I’ll remember the bond. Those women fought for each other. They believed in each other. They made Duke proud.

“That season, we didn’t just win games — we built a standard. And I hope every team that steps onto that floor remembers that feeling. Undefeated at Cameron. That doesn’t happen by chance. It happens by choice, by culture, and by relentless belief.”
