“IS NICK SABAN REALLY DONE? Colin Cowherd Hints at SHOCK NFL Comeback with the Dallas Cowboys”
The GOAT of college football might not be finished just yet…
Nick Saban signed off on a coaching legacy when he decided to retire from college football on January 10, 2024. It was the culmination of a career that saw 292 career wins, six national titles with Alabama, 11 SEC crowns, and not a single losing season.
Saban has coached players everywhere from Toledo to Michigan State and LSU. He even made a pit stop in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins. Saban is college football royalty, and he decided to bow out right when he was on top. Retirement is not always the end in football, though, especially when whispers of a comeback are around in NFL hallways.
Could Nick Saban Follow Jim Harbaugh’s Path Back to the NFL?
FS1 sports commentator Colin Cowherd, on a recent episode of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” discussed a possible return and drew parallels between Saban and Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh’s NFL route.
“And Saban and the (Dallas) Cowboys feel huge,” Cowherd said. And he is not wrong. Harbaugh’s return to the league with the Chargers turned heads immediately. The Chargers saw an overnight resurgence. “It felt like a quake,” Cowherd pointed out. “It was huge.”
Saban with the Cowboys would do nothing less. So, what happens if Saban does the same? The Cowboys, coming off an unfortunate 7–10 season and missing the NFL playoffs, desperately need that kind of resurgence.
As Cowherd sees it, “Right now, the Dallas Cowboys have a problem… Free agents? Not that interested.” Saban, in Cowherd’s eyes, could fix that. “Saban gives them instant credibility.”
It is very possible. But Saban’s first stint with the NFL was not the best. He ended with a 15–17 record over two seasons. However, that was nearly two decades ago. Since then, he’s become the most accomplished college football coach of his era.
Saban’s return now could change things. Just like Harbaugh, the timing might be perfect. Harbaugh left behind Michigan’s national title glow for an 11–6 record with the Chargers in his first year. Saban, who is freshly retired and watching from the sidelines, could follow the Harbaugh blueprint very well.
Dallas is currently a bit of a mess. Their offensive line is rebuilding, and their defense is struggling. The locker room looks like it has a bit of an identity crisis. If there’s one coach who can walk into chaos and command respect from day one, it’s Saban.
hat Are the Chances Saban Actually Returns to Coaching?
If it was up to Cowherd, then yes. Unfortunately, it isn’t, and while nothing is specific just yet, the optimism needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. The Saban comeback news has been all over the headlines since former Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy hinted that a possible comeback was brewing.
“They seem to think Nick Saban’s not done coaching,” McElroy said. “I had a similar reaction. He’s pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again. … Look, if it wasn’t someone notable, I’d never say a word.” Saban’s daughter Kristen Saban has cleared the air.
Kristen Saban took to Instagram and clarified that her father was not returning. “He’s not coming back to coaching, hate to break it to you,” she wrote. “You had your time.” Well, it does sound like Saban’s comeback dreams might just remain dreams.
If Saban decides to go against all odds and make a comeback for the Cowboys, there’s no doubt that stadiums will fill up yet again to experience the Alabama energy.
