🔥 2025 NEW ORLEANS SAINTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT: QB BATTLE HEATS UP, RISING STARS EMERGE, AND BIG NAMES STEP ASIDE
Metairie, Louisiana — With NFL training camps officially underway, all eyes are on the New Orleans Saints — a franchise in transition and brimming with questions heading into the 2025 season.
And make no mistake: the battle lines have been drawn, especially at quarterback.
The Saints kicked off their first full day of camp Wednesday with energy, optimism, and a cloud of uncertainty surrounding key positions. Here’s everything we’ve seen and heard straight from the fields in Metairie — including breakout players, depth chart shifts, and a brewing QB showdown that could define the future of the franchise.
QB WATCH: Rattler vs. Shough Begins
In what promises to be the Saints’ most competitive quarterback battle since Taysom Hill vs. Jameis Winston in 2021, second-year passer Spencer Rattler took the first-team reps on Day 1.
But don’t take that as a sign he’s been named the starter.
“Spencer obviously took all the ones today,” said new head coach Kellen Moore. “Tyler [Shough] will take them tomorrow. We’ll continue to rotate all these guys.”
Moore made it clear: the job is wide open. And there’s no timeline for a final decision.
“The sooner you make a decision, the sooner you can lock in on your packages,” Moore added. “But we’ll let this play out as long as necessary.”
That means Saints fans — and fantasy managers — should buckle up. This competition is just getting started.
RAMP-UP MODE: Light Practice, Heavy Implications
Wednesday’s session lasted just under an hour — the shortest practice expected in camp — as the Saints gradually build intensity heading into preseason. Moore noted that Thursday’s session will be similarly light before full-scale activity kicks in.
While the tempo was controlled, the urgency was real. Position groups are starting to take shape, chemistry is forming, and newcomers are already turning heads.
🚑 INJURY NOTES & ABSENCES
Two familiar names were not on the field:
Taysom Hill (TE/utility weapon)
Foster Moreau (TE)
Both opened camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list as they recover from undisclosed issues.
Also absent was Tyrann Mathieu, who announced his retirement just yesterday — ending an All-Pro career and leaving a leadership void in the secondary.
WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
As the Saints push deeper into camp, these will be the most important storylines to follow:
Quarterback Showdown: Can Rattler build momentum and take command? Or will Tyler Shough steal the spotlight?
Rookie Risers: Who among the 2025 draft class is earning early praise?
Roster Bubble Battles: Several players are fighting for spots on the 53-man roster — and every rep counts.
Fantasy Radar: Which skill players are flashing early chemistry with the QBs?
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
Training camp leads directly into the Saints’ first preseason matchup on August 7. Between now and then, the intensity will ratchet up — and the front office will begin answering the tough questions.
Is this the year the Saints finally solve the quarterback puzzle? Will Kellen Moore’s system breathe life into an offense that’s lacked consistency?
We’ll find out soon enough.
For now, keep checking back for daily updates from camp. One thing’s for sure: the 2025 New Orleans Saints are a team worth watching.
