What ever happened to controversial New Orleans Saints roster cut A.T. Perry?
The New Orleans Saints have made plenty of decisions over the past few years that could be considered questionable, or at least less than optimal in hindsight. Some of their more recent choices have been viewed as having the potential to backfire long-term, one of the most notable being their release of wide receiver A.T. Perry only a year after selecting him in the 2023 NFL draft.
Perry moved on to sign with the Denver Broncos and has remained a part of their practice squad ever since. The potential for him to break out is there, and it was seen during his few stints of playing time in New Orleans, but the problem lately has been his health. He opened training camp on the PUP list, which Denver expected, but he hasn’t been activated by the time the preseason got here.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton discussed Perry’s absence at minicamp back in June, due to an ankle injury: “There may be one player, Perry, that might go a week into training camp and then be ready, depending on how the summer goes. Outside of that, we expect everyone back.”
However, since then, Perry has not returned to play in any capacity and has remained on the PUP list for the majority of training camp. His ankle has continued to bother him for quite a while now, and the concern surrounding that grows the more time he misses.
It will be interesting to see how Perry recovers from this setback in the coming weeks and if he can get any reps during the preseason or not. If not, the next question becomes whether or not the Broncos can justify keeping him on a roster spot or the practice squad. A reunion in New Orleans may not be in the cards, but it’s worth noting the coach that cut him isn’t here anymore.
