What Is Isaiah Evans Really Building This Summer? Inside the Duke Star’s Hometown Camp, His Journey From ‘Showtime Slim’ to Mentor, and Why Fans Are Watching Closely

Duke guard Isaiah Evans may be one of the most exciting young talents in college basketball, but this summer, his biggest highlight is happening far from Cameron Indoor Stadium. Instead of dazzling fans with his trademark three-pointers and electric scoring runs, Evans is back in his hometown of Concord, North Carolina, building something even bigger: a basketball camp designed to inspire the next generation.

The Isaiah Evans Basketball Camp, hosted in partnership with nonprofit Destined 4 Greatness Hoops, is more than a few drills and scrimmages. It’s a full-circle moment for the 6-foot-6 guard nicknamed “Showtime Slim”, who captured attention last season with a breathtaking 18-point first-half explosion against Auburn. For Evans, giving back isn’t just about teaching kids how to shoot a jumper—it’s about showing them what’s possible when dreams meet discipline.

“I just try to give back to the kids as much as possible,” Evans explained. “Even if it’s just giving them a voice of guidance from a distance, or now, giving that guidance up close.”

From Rising Star to Role Model

Evans’ rise at Duke wasn’t all smooth. His offensive bursts turned heads, but questions about his defensive effort cut into his minutes early in the season. By the year’s end, though, Evans had silenced critics by transforming into a more balanced, reliable contributor for Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils. That growth—humility, hard work, and adaptability—is exactly what he’s now pouring into his camp.

For many of the young kids dribbling on the Concord hardwood, the NBA may not be the end goal. But Evans believes basketball is still a powerful teacher. “Even if they don’t make the league,” he says, “if chasing their dream helps them build confidence, discipline, and belief in themselves, then everybody wins.”

Why Fans Are Paying Attention

Duke fans are watching Evans’ summer not only for the feel-good story but also for clues about the season ahead. With teammates like Darren Harris, Ace Flagg, and Cooper Flagg drawing headlines, Evans has quietly positioned himself as an X-factor. His growing leadership off the court could foreshadow a bigger role on it.

And in an era where college athletes juggle NIL deals, media scrutiny, and the weight of expectations, Evans’ decision to invest in his community rather than chase the spotlight speaks volumes. It paints the picture of a player evolving beyond “Showtime Slim” into someone teammates—and kids back home—can count on.

Building More Than a Camp

What Evans is really building this summer is momentum—momentum for Duke, for himself, and for a group of kids who may leave his camp believing a little more in their own future.

It’s a story of growth, not just stats. And that’s why Duke fans, parents in Concord, and college basketball watchers everywhere should be paying close attention.

Because when Isaiah Evans steps back on the floor this fall, it won’t just be about buckets. It’ll be about a young man who’s learned that real greatness isn’t only measured by points scored—but by lives touched.
