New England Patriots fullback Jack Westover claimed that he switched from the No. 87 jersey to the No. 37 for two reasons.
One of the reasons is that he wore the No. 37 as a walk-on at the University of Washington. So there’s some history with that number.
The other reason is the fact that the No. 87 jersey belonged to Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski, who is viewed by many as the greatest tight end in NFL history. There is a great deal of history that comes with the No. 87 jersey in New England.
Not only did Gronkowski wear that number, but former five-time Pro Bowler Ben Coates also wore that number.
#Patriots FB Jack Westover switched to No. 37 mostly because he wore it in college, but he also added that he wanted to get out of No. 87 out of respect to Gronk.
Some might argue that the No. 87 jersey should be retired in honor of Gronkowski.
One has to wonder if the Patriots will ultimately choose to do that at some point. They did it for legendary quarterback Tom Brady with the No. 12. It wouldn’t be a stretch to argue that Gronkowski deserves the same honor.
