Last week, the government shutdown greatly affected the UNC basketball program’s recruiting efforts.
Due to the immense number of airline cancellations, five-star point guard prospect Dylan Mingo was unable to make his scheduled trip to Chapel Hill. Once the information surfaced, it seemed that this hiccup would be a significant blow to the Tar Heels’ recruiting efforts for Mingo. However, some very positive news surfaced on Wednesday morning to indicate that it was simply a small setback for a potentially major comeback.
Joe Tipton of Rivals reported that Mingo has rescheduled his visit to North Carolina. The 6-foot-5 point guard is now expected to be on campus this upcoming weekend.
What this news means
This is a significant bit of news, given that it wasn’t fully guaranteed that Mingo would ever make his way to Chapel Hill.
Given the circumstances, Mingo could’ve easily just cancelled his visit, especially if he had another destination in mind to begin his college basketball career. However, the five-star point guard found a way to reschedule (and quickly), showing that there certainly is at least some level of interest on his end with regard to what the UNC basketball program has to offer.
That alone is significant.
Now, it will be up to Hubert Davis and his staff to capitalize on this opportunity, one that not many people expected them to have following last weeks’ news. Things tend to happen for a reason, and while the Tar Heels would’ve loved to have had Mingo experience the insane atmosphere during Friday night’s top-25 duel against Kansas, they are just happy that he was able (and willing) to reschedule his visit to campus so quickly.
Just when it felt like hope was being lost in this particular recruitment, Tipton came alone to provide us with some awesome news. The UNC basketball program will get its crack at showing Dylan Mingo that Chapel Hill should be the place he calls his future home.
