KENTUCKY ROARS BACK: POPE SHUFFLES LINEUP AS WILDCATS CRUSH ANOTHER UNDERDOG

Kentucky followed a familiar script at Rupp Arena on Tuesday night—one that fans have seen unfold six times already this season. Faced with yet another overmatched mid-major opponent, the Wildcats delivered another resounding blowout, overpowering North Carolina Central 103–67. The Eagles entered the night ranked No. 350 in the KenPom ratings, and Kentucky, a 44.5-point favorite, once again showed why it has been dominant against lesser competition. With this victory, the Cats improved to 6–0 against mid-major foes, winning those matchups by an average of more than 40 points per game.

But despite the gaudy score and explosive offensive performance, the win did little to calm the growing tension around Mark Pope’s squad. Kentucky remains winless against ranked opponents (0–4), and the team’s struggles last week—falling to North Carolina at home and suffering a staggering 35-point defeat to Gonzaga in Nashville—pushed the Wildcats out of the Top 25 for the first time in Pope’s tenure. Fans are restless, the expectations are high, and the schedule is about to get much tougher.

That’s why Saturday’s matchup looms large. Indiana comes to Rupp Arena next, another traditional powerhouse that also dropped out of the rankings after its own rough week. Still, the Hoosiers are widely projected as an NCAA Tournament team, and they represent exactly the kind of opponent Pope needs to beat to steady Kentucky’s season. Tuesday night was never going to provide that kind of resume boost, but it did give the Wildcats a chance to reset, regroup, and try something new.

And Mark Pope certainly took advantage.

A NEW LOOK LINEUP SPARKS A NEW ENERGY

In a move that caught many by surprise, Pope shook up his starting five. Freshman Trent Noah, the Harlan native who has steadily earned more trust, joined the lineup alongside Denzel Aberdeen, Collin Chandler, Otega Oweh, and Malachi Moreno. Noah immediately rewarded his coach’s confidence, drilling a three-pointer for Kentucky’s first basket of the night and giving the Cats an early spark.

Still, Kentucky didn’t pull away right away. Despite the talent gap, NC Central hung around through the opening stretch, trimming the deficit to 29–21 as Kentucky continued to make early mistakes. One of those miscues—a turnover that led to a momentum-shifting dunk—prompted Pope to use a frustrated timeout. He directed much of his criticism toward Brandon Garrison, who did not return to the game after the exchange.

But the message was received by the rest of the team.

Kentucky exploded shortly after the timeout, ripping off a 16–0 run that created the separation fans had been waiting for. By halftime, the Wildcats led 52–31, and the outcome never again came into question.

BENCH BOOST AND BREAKOUT PERFORMANCES

Much of the night belonged not to Kentucky’s usual stars but to players stepping into bigger roles. Freshman guard Jasper Johnson delivered a career-high 22 points, showcasing the elite scoring ability that made him one of the most coveted recruits in the country. He attacked the rim, shot confidently from outside, and looked every bit like a future focal point of this team.

Otega Oweh turned in his best performance of the season as well, pouring in 21 points, drilling three of his four attempts from behind the arc, and stuffing the stat sheet with seven rebounds and four steals. His energy on both ends set the tone for Kentucky’s defensive pressure and transition attack.

Noah, making his debut in the starting lineup, finished with 11 points, all in the first half, while adding six rebounds and three assists. Moreno continued his steady rise with 14 points and seven boards, providing the interior presence Kentucky needed with multiple forwards still sidelined.

Collin Chandler’s playmaking stood out as well—he dished out eight assists, often pushing the pace and getting teammates easy looks. Aberdeen contributed eight points and five assists, giving Pope more reasons to trust his improving backcourt depth.

A TEAM STILL WORKING BACK TO FULL STRENGTH

Kentucky’s lineup remains far from whole. Starting forward Mouhamed Dioubate missed his fifth straight game due to an ankle injury, while sophomore Jayden Quaintance continues recovering from offseason knee surgery. Their eventual returns will reshape Kentucky’s rotations once again.

Point guard Jaland Lowe, who had missed five games with a shoulder injury, made a brief appearance in the second half. Though he played limited minutes, his presence is a promising sign for a backcourt that will need his steadiness as competition stiffens.

Even walk-on Zach Tow had a moment to celebrate, knocking down a three-pointer in the final minute for his first career field goal—an exclamation point on a night that saw contributions from nearly every player available.

LOOKING AHEAD: PRESSURE RISING, OPPORTUNITY KNOCKING

Kentucky has proven it can dominate the games it’s supposed to win. But the true test now lies ahead. Indiana represents an opportunity—not just for a quality win, but for a reset to the season’s narrative. A win over the Hoosiers could restore confidence and begin to rebuild Kentucky’s tournament résumé.

Pope’s lineup experiment paid off Tuesday, injecting energy and revealing new contributors ready for bigger roles. But the Wildcats must now take those improvements into a much tougher environment against a much tougher opponent.

For one night, though, Kentucky looked sharp, motivated, and hungry. And with the season’s most meaningful stretch approaching, that might be the spark they desperately needed.
