Amid the whirlwind that has surrounded the North Carolina Tar Heels over the last two weeks, no player has experienced a sharper emotional swing than Zayden High.
What began as a feel-good stretch for North Carolina quickly turned into a season-altering gauntlet. Just days removed from a stunning comeback win over archrival Duke Blue Devils, the Tar Heels appeared to be surging at the perfect time. Confidence was high, momentum was building, and ACC title hopes felt realistic.
Then everything changed.
Injuries to Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar stripped UNC of its two most impactful frontcourt presences. What followed were sobering losses to Miami Hurricanes and NC State Wolfpack — including an 82-58 blowout that served as a harsh reality check.
And in the middle of it all? Zayden High.
From Suspension to Starting Role
High’s journey has been anything but conventional. After being suspended for the entirety of the 2024–25 season, his return to Chapel Hill already represented a second chance. Now technically in his third year with the program, the sophomore forward entered this season as a depth option, averaging just 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.
He was expected to provide energy in limited minutes.
Instead, he’s been thrust into a starting role during one of the most pivotal stretches of the season.
With Wilson and Veesaar sidelined, High has started the last two games — and responded with the best basketball of his UNC career.
Against Pitt on Feb. 14, he delivered 15 points and seven rebounds on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting performance in a 79-65 win. It was a breakout showing built on effort plays, rim runs, and activity on the glass.
Even in the lopsided loss to NC State, High remained one of the few bright spots. In 30 minutes, he posted 13 points and 10 rebounds, securing his first double-double in ACC play and battling inside despite the score getting out of hand.
For a player who had largely lived at the end of the bench, the leap in responsibility has been dramatic.
“It’s Been a Roller Coaster”
After the loss to NC State, High reflected on the emotional swings of the last two weeks.
“It’s definitely been a roller coaster,” he said. “But, it’s nothing that Coach Davis hasn’t prepared us for. We have belief, coaches have belief in everybody on the team. It’s just got to be next guy up, somebody has got to step up.”
That mentality — next man up — is now more than a cliché. It’s a necessity.
High also emphasized the importance of collective energy and unity.
“We’ve just got to find it as a group. I feel like we’ve just got to step our energy, and level up.”
Those words carry weight. UNC’s struggles in the losses weren’t just about missing star power; they were about defensive breakdowns, stagnant offense, and a visible dip in intensity. If the Tar Heels are going to weather this stretch, players like High must continue to provide effort-based production while veterans rediscover consistency.
A Crucial Stretch Ahead
The road doesn’t get easier.
UNC’s remaining slate features:
Away at Syracuse Orange
Home vs No. 21 Louisville Cardinals
Home vs Virginia Tech Hokies
Home vs Clemson Tigers
Away at No. 3 Duke Blue Devils
That closing trip to Duke alone could have massive ACC and NCAA Tournament implications.
For the Tar Heels to stay in contention for the ACC crown — and position themselves for a favorable seed in the NCAA Tournament — their depth must transform from a question mark into a strength.
High’s emergence doesn’t solve everything. He’s not replacing Wilson’s star power or Veesaar’s interior presence. But what he provides is stability, effort, and proof that this roster still has untapped contributors.
More Than Just Stats
Perhaps the most important development isn’t the box score — it’s the confidence.
A player once sidelined for an entire season is now logging 30 minutes in critical ACC matchups. He’s defending, rebounding, finishing inside, and speaking like someone who understands the urgency of the moment.
For a team searching for identity amid adversity, that matters.
The Tar Heels’ season is at a crossroads. Injuries have tested their depth. Losses have tested their resilience. The next two weeks may determine whether UNC is merely surviving — or evolving.
And right in the middle of that evolution stands Zayden High, embracing the wildest stretch of his college career and turning a second chance into a defining opportunity.
