Jon Scheyer Says Painful Loss to UNC Became the Reference Point That United Duke and Sparked a Seven-Game Surge Ahead of Rivalry Rematch at Cameron Indoor

The sting of a rivalry loss can either fracture a team or forge it into something stronger. For Jon Scheyer, the setback against North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball served as a moment of reflection rather than panic — and the results since then suggest Duke chose growth over frustration.
Duke extended its winning streak to seven games after dismantling NC State Wolfpack men’s basketball, 93-64, at the Lenovo Center on Monday night. From the opening tip, the Blue Devils overwhelmed their in-state rivals with precision offense and suffocating defense.
The top-ranked Blue Devils improved to 28-2 overall and 16-1 in ACC play, reinforcing their position as one of the favorites heading into postseason action. Their dominance against NC State was a clear example of a team playing with confidence and cohesion.
Yet the last blemish on Duke’s résumé still lingers in memory. That 71-68 defeat came at the hands of North Carolina in the first week of February — a rivalry thriller that was decided in dramatic fashion.
In that contest, UNC guard Seth Trimble buried a game-winning three-pointer that stunned Duke and sent the Tar Heels faithful into celebration. For the Blue Devils, it was a painful reminder of how razor-thin the margin for error can be in elite matchups.
Speaking in a video posted by Sports Illustrated’s Matt Giles, Scheyer admitted the loss forced him to examine his own approach. Rather than labeling it a turning point, he described it as a valuable reference point in a long and demanding season.
“I don’t know if it’s a turning point,” Scheyer said. “I think it’s just another reference point and a step in the season. I think any loss gives you an opportunity to look a little bit differently at games, and I certainly did as a coach—what can I do better for these guys?”
The second-year head coach emphasized that accountability began with himself. Instead of deflecting blame, he used the moment to evaluate strategy, preparation, and leadership — particularly with March looming.
Scheyer also pointed out how losses can test the chemistry of even the most talented rosters. “When you lose, I think you can splinter. I think it’s very easy to do,” he said, acknowledging the emotional toll rivalry defeats can bring.
Rather than allowing division to creep in, Duke chose unity. The team leaned into its two losses this season as fuel, using them as opportunities to strengthen internal communication and tighten defensive execution.
The results have been undeniable. Since falling to North Carolina, Duke has stacked wins over Pittsburgh, Clemson, Syracuse, Michigan, Notre Dame, Virginia, and now NC State — a stretch that highlights both consistency and adaptability.
Each victory has carried a similar theme: improved ball movement, sharper defensive rotations, and a visible sense of trust between players. Duke appears to be peaking at the right time, with the NCAA Tournament just around the corner.
Still, the ultimate test awaits. The Blue Devils will host North Carolina in a highly anticipated rematch at Cameron Indoor Stadium, renewing what many consider the fiercest rivalry in college basketball.
For Scheyer, the matchup holds personal significance. As a former Duke player, he experienced the emotional intensity of this rivalry firsthand, battling UNC in some of the sport’s most memorable clashes.
Now as head coach, Scheyer will aim to apply the lessons learned from that February defeat. If Duke’s recent form is any indication, the Blue Devils won’t just be seeking revenge — they’ll be looking to prove that adversity truly made them more connected when it mattered most.
