Associated Press Names Caleb Wilson Second-Team All-America, Cementing UNC Freshman Legacy

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Associated Press has named University of North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson a second-team All-America, further solidifying his historic first season with the Tar Heels.

Wilson joins an elite group of 54 former Carolina greats whose names hang in the rafters of the Dean E. Smith Center, a testament to his immediate impact on the program.

The Atlanta native achieved a rare feat in UNC men’s basketball history, becoming the first Tar Heel ever to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists per game as a freshman.

Wilson finished the season averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game, breaking UNC freshman records and putting himself in the conversation with legends like Antawn Jamison and Tyler Hansbrough.

In addition to his All-America honor, Wilson was a first-team All-ACC selection and made the ACC All-Freshman Team, joining Jamison and Hansbrough as the only freshmen in program history to earn first-team All-ACC honors.

He also earned accolades from Field of 68 and CBS Sports (second-team All-America) and Sporting News (third-team All-America), cementing his reputation as one of the most decorated freshmen in college basketball this season.

Wilson’s season was marked by consistency and spectacular individual performances. He set a UNC freshman record with 24 consecutive games in double figures and tallied 17 games with 20 or more points, the most by any Carolina freshman.

His highlight moments included scoring 23 points in the Tar Heels’ 71-68 victory over Duke, hitting a clutch basket late in UNC’s win at Virginia, and posting a stat line of 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals in the win over Kansas.

Despite suffering setbacks, Wilson’s resilience stood out. He broke a bone in his left hand at Miami on February 10, missing six games, and then suffered a season-ending right thumb injury on March 5 during practice.

Even with these injuries, he recorded 11 double-doubles, became the first Tar Heel freshman to score 20 or more points in six straight games, and earned National Player-of-the-Week honors three times, alongside three ACC Freshman of the Week awards. He also earned KenPom Game MVP honors in half of the games he played, underlining his dominance on both ends of the floor.

Coaches and analysts are already projecting Wilson as a cornerstone for UNC moving forward. “Caleb’s work ethic, skill set, and leadership are already at a veteran level,” said UNC head coach Hubert Davis. “Despite injuries, he has shown he can carry the team in multiple ways, and his future in Chapel Hill is incredibly bright.”

With this historic season, Wilson not only etched his name in UNC history but also set a new standard for future Tar Heel freshmen.
