KENTUCKY’S MILAN MOMCILOVIC EARNS NAISMITH PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINATION AS MARK POPE PREPARES TO BUILD OFFENSE AROUND ELITE SHOOTER

Kentucky basketball is receiving another major boost ahead of the 2026-27 regular season, with standout forward Milan Momcilovic earning recognition as one of the leading players to watch in college basketball. The Wildcats’ new offensive weapon has been named among the 50 candidates for the prestigious Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year Award, adding another impressive achievement to his growing collection of preseason honors.

The announcement, made Monday, further highlights the expectations surrounding Momcilovic as he prepares for his first season in Lexington. Following his impressive performances at Iowa State, the 6-foot-9 forward has quickly become one of the most exciting additions to Mark Pope’s roster. His shooting ability, offensive confidence and experience make him an important piece of Kentucky’s ambitions this season.

The Naismith recognition is particularly significant because it places Momcilovic among a group of players expected to make considerable contributions to their respective programs. Although the nomination does not guarantee individual success, it demonstrates the national attention surrounding his potential heading into the new campaign.

Kentucky supporters have already received encouraging signs of what he could deliver.

MOMCILOVIC MAKES AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT IN KENTUCKY’S EXHIBITIONS

Through Kentucky’s three exhibition games, Momcilovic established himself as the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.7 points per contest.

He also demonstrated his perimeter efficiency by connecting on nine of his 20 three-point attempts during those preseason matchups. His ability to score consistently from beyond the arc has provided Pope with another dangerous offensive option capable of stretching opposing defenses.

For a Kentucky team looking to compete at the highest level, having a player who can create scoring opportunities without necessarily needing the ball in his hands for extended periods is extremely valuable.

Momcilovic’s shooting threat forces defenders to pay close attention to his movements, potentially opening driving lanes and creating additional opportunities for his teammates.

However, his impressive exhibition performances should not come as a surprise to anyone familiar with his previous accomplishments.

During his time at Iowa State, Momcilovic established himself as one of the most productive perimeter shooters in college basketball. Last season, he made 136 three-pointers, breaking Iowa State’s single-season program record and placing second on the Big 12’s all-time single-season list.

He also recorded 29 double-digit scoring performances, demonstrating his ability to contribute consistently rather than relying on occasional offensive explosions.

His impressive campaign earned him All-Big 12 Second Team honors and recognition on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.

Those accomplishments helped establish his reputation as an elite shooter and explain why Kentucky viewed him as such an important addition during the transfer process.

MARK POPE WANTS EVEN MORE FROM HIS STAR SHOOTER

While Momcilovic has already demonstrated his ability to score, one of the biggest priorities for Kentucky’s coaching staff is finding additional ways to maximize his offensive production.

Pope understands that having an exceptional shooter is only part of the equation. The Wildcats must also develop an offensive structure that consistently creates opportunities for him to get comfortable looks.

During a media session on Friday, Pope was asked whether Momcilovic needed encouragement to become more aggressive when hunting for shots.

The Kentucky coach made it clear that his new forward does not require much instruction.

“I don’t have to tell Milan much of anything. He’s pretty self-sustaining,” Pope said. “It’s fun to have a guy that you kind of just stay out of his way more than anything else.”

Pope’s comments reflect the confidence he has in Momcilovic’s basketball instincts and natural shooting ability.

Rather than constantly reminding him to shoot, Kentucky’s coaching staff is concentrating on creating more opportunities through different offensive approaches.

“We’re continuing to try, like, I’d love to get him more shots. That’s where we’re living, is how can we find more creative ways to get him shots? How can we earn them just when we’re in our secondary offense, our flow offense and how can we earn him shots out of play calling?”

Pope also explained why incorporating Momcilovic into the offense has not been particularly difficult.

“It’s not hard because he’s such an aggressive shooter, he makes really tough shots.”

That assessment is encouraging for Kentucky fans. Having a player who naturally looks for scoring opportunities while possessing the confidence to convert difficult attempts gives the Wildcats considerable offensive flexibility.

KENTUCKY’S OFFENSE COULD REVOLVE AROUND MOMCILOVIC

As the regular season approaches, Momcilovic’s importance to Kentucky’s offensive plans is becoming increasingly obvious.

Pope has a player capable of stretching the floor, scoring in bunches and creating difficult defensive assignments. His presence could become particularly valuable against opponents that prefer to defend the paint and limit penetration.

The Wildcats can use his shooting ability to create space for their guards and interior players while also designing specific plays to get him open beyond the three-point line.

However, Kentucky will need more than perimeter shooting to achieve its championship ambitions. Consistency, defensive commitment and contributions from the entire roster will remain essential.

For Momcilovic, the challenge will be maintaining his impressive shooting standards while adjusting to the demands of SEC basketball.

His Naismith Player of the Year candidacy provides another reason for excitement, but the biggest opportunity is helping Kentucky become a legitimate national championship contender.

With his record-breaking experience at Iowa State, encouraging exhibition performances and Pope’s confidence, Momcilovic has the foundation to enjoy an outstanding season.

Kentucky has recruited a proven offensive weapon, and its coaching staff appears determined to put him in the best possible position to succeed.

The preseason recognition is already arriving. Now, Momcilovic has an opportunity to prove that he belongs among college basketball’s elite when the games begin to count.
