Liverpool’s academy is thriving right now. Jurgen Klopp is blessed for choice in terms of who to call-up and promote into the first team.
Never has there been such an exciting generation coming through the ranks as the one at the moment. And that was demonstrated with the young Reds’ absolute thumping of Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup.
Liverpool’s U18 side ran out 7-1 winners in an emphatic result, which saw plenty of impressive individual performances. But there was one among them who really caught the eye, and who has been going under the radar this season.
Lewis Koumas going under the radar
Lewis Koumas scored a hat-trick against Arsenal and also registered an assist in what was a really dominant display from the 18-year-old.
That performance means he now has eight goals and four assists in 12 league and cup games for the club at academy level so far this season. He’s averaging a goal contribution every 79 minutes in that time.
Yet, rightfully so it has been Jayden Danns who has grabbed most of the headlines at academy level, while Koumas has gone under the radar.
In pre-season, Koumas was involved with the first team, and back then Jurgen Klopp described him as having “all the things you need as a kid to become a real player” as per Wales Online. Last month, Koumas was also in the Liverpool squad in the Europa League against Union SG.
In this rich run of form, it is now surely a matter of time until he makes his competitive debut for the club as well.
