In a recent column, Paul Merson recalled Jurgen Klopp’s surprise announcement that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
Merse said the Sky Sports pundit is looking forward to Premier League action this week, including the season-defining match between the Reds and Arsenal.
Paul Merson reacts to Jurgen Klopp’s surprise decision to leave Liverpool this summer in the latest Sky Sports column and what he believes is a crucial Premier League game that could go a long way in deciding his fate.
Competition for the title of the season… Klopp’s comments leave shock, but management is hit I was shocked. They make four this year. They don’t seem to have any difficulties. I’m a big fan of manager Klopp and what he’s done there. I stopped working with that company last year, but signed a contract again this year.
It surprised me, but it shows how much effort and time you have to put in, and it pays off in the end. They will probably look at Manchester City and the way they play will be as difficult as Dortmund, where they will have to be at their best to win.
The same goes for Liverpool. Cost much. I was a manager, there weren’t enough hours in the day and I didn’t stop. Don’t misunderstand. Although they charge a lot of money, it is a time consuming task.
Klopp needs to recharge his batteries before heading out again But if he leaves Liverpool, he might not like the normal life. People like to be in the middle of things. You will have to watch Neil Warnock over the years.
People will be excited to come back and it will be fun. You may need to recharge before going again. But honestly, I couldn’t say enough about him. I’m a big fan and I think he’s one of those managers who can come into League 1 or League 2 and take a team through the league.
It’s a big loss for Liverpool but it’s great if Klopp can win the league now. It’s a big loss for Liverpool. What he has done is bring Liverpool back to a level they haven’t been at in 30 years.
They won one in thirty. If you’re not an Arsenal, Manchester City or Manchester United fan this year, you’ll want to see Liverpool win. They waited 30 years and won it during the lockout. Because it wasn’t the same as it used to be because the poor fans couldn’t attend.
We must also remember the players acquired in the summer. No disrespect to Liverpool but a lot of it will be Jurgen Klopp and all of a sudden he’s gone and people are saying, ‘Wait a minute, I’m here for Jurgen Klopp. ‘But these players play for fantastic, great football clubs, one of the best in the world, so be careful what you wish for.
The match between Chelsea and Arsenal is crucial for Liverpool can now get down to business for the year and it all depends on the next two games – Chelsea and Arsenal. You like it when they win, but you lose.
This is where Manchester City and Liverpool will take you. If Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest, Liverpool must win too. If you don’t beat Liverpool, you’re out. It can change very quickly from a two-horse race, or it can go from a three-horse race to a one-horse race. It’s a good time.
Weekday Gyeonggi is also good. Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday – accident, blow, explosion. You have 6 points and you are in good shape whether you are at the bottom or the top.
If you finish 6th or 7th and have 6 points and the team around you only gets 1 point or none at all, that’s huge. That’s a lot of games for any team. But if you look at Manchester City, Burnley are at home and I expect them to win. Chelsea will be a really tough challenge but Liverpool will miss it.
It’s a different run, a different game this week [compared to Liverpool’s recent wins]. I think there will be a change after we see this. I think Trent Alexander-Arnold will play if he is healthy.
[Conor] Bradley was fantastic and I think [Dominik] Soboslay will be there if he’s fit. [Alexis] McAllister is playing this weekend so cheer up. But this game is a difficult one for Liverpool. Chelsea have lost just two of their last 10 games and could have won both defeats to Wolves and Middlesbrough. They were very extravagant.
It’s a big game and I think Liverpool will win this game because of their home advantage but I don’t think they will beat Arsenal even after the cup game. If Arsenal play near here again, they cannot afford to be doubly wasteful.
