Trent Alexander-Arnold has compared Liverpool’s current ‘2.0’ squad to Jurgen Klopp’s first team Liverpool. He says they are coming. Liverpool have performed better than expected this season, topping the Premier League with just one defeat in February. And that defeat was certainly a tragedy against Tottenham Hotspur.
The overhaul in the summer was expected to lead to a transition period where the Reds would build a title-challenging squad through progressive signings and player development. Instead, they compete with this team on four fronts. But how good is this team? And perhaps more importantly, how does he compare to Jurgen Klopp’s first?
Ultimately, this would be the manager’s last team at Liverpool. Trent Alexander-Arnold says Liverpool’s 2.0 team are on their way to the top, if not yet. “I think our intensity has gone up,” he told LFCTV. “The way we press, the counter-press, the intensity and the pace of the whole game reminds me of a few years ago when we were at our peak as a team.
“It’s very similar, different players, different style of football, but the intensity is always there and it’s something that’s instilled in us and demanded of us. “It’s something we like and believe in because we see it working.” “Almost” is the key word here.
Liverpool haven’t reached that level yet. They will get there and it’s worth remembering that the 2019/20 squad had a successful campaign together last year. Whatever this team is, it’s amazing that they are reaching the same level and top level under Klopp. It’s not yet known if you’ll reach that level later, but walking this path is a huge accomplishment.
