Many people know why the Patriots beat Malcolm Butler in Super Bowl LII.But if you believe Devin McCourty, that group is very, very small and not even a part of it. The legendary New England safety appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz” on Thursday. McCourty, who retired a year ago, said he doesn’t know the answer to that question and, like many others, hopes the truth will come out in Butler’s latest book and documentary. “I’m curious,” McCourty said of Radio Row during Super Bowl LVIII.
“… I do not know. I always ask people, “Why didn’t Malcolm say that?” … There were rumors that I was going to publish a book.” “He called me when he got back and said, ‘Hey, Belichick just called me. He might come back.” I said, “Really? … Are you sure you want to come back here?” Then he said, “Yeah,” and I said, “Yeah, but what’s going on?” “What happened (in the Super Bowl)?” And he said nothing. “He said, ‘I don’t know,’” McCourty said.“I haven’t heard anyone say why he’s not playing. I do not know”.
“If I had known, I wouldn’t have said it anyway, but I don’t,” he said.Maybe McCourty is telling the truth. Maybe it wasn’t like that. It’s hard to believe he doesn’t know about Butler’s chair, but we’ll take his word for it.Anyway, I hope this mystery is solved someday.
