Xabi Alonso was reportedly earmarked to take over at Liverpool when he first took over from Bayer Leverkusen.Alonso was a leading candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager at the end of the season. The Reds manager announced his resignation last month, sparking speculation about who his successor would be.In addition to Alonso, Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi, Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim and Brentford’s Thomas Frank also attended. Despite rumors of other candidates, Alonso has been the favorite in recent weeks.
The former Liverpool midfielder was appointed Leverkusen manager in October 2022, having previously started his professional career at Real Sociedad B. In Alonso’s first full season in charge after finishing sixth last season, Leverkusen are top of the Bundesliga and five points clear of Bayern Munich after a 3-0 win last weekend.
