Crystal Palace canceled their Thursday press conference after Roy Hodgson fell ill in training. The 76-year-old, who managed Liverpool in 2010/11, is at risk of being sacked at Selhurst Park after a string of poor results.
While the announcement of Hodgson’s sacking was expected to be imminent, Palace instead released a statement to the X on Thursday afternoon, revealing the manager was unwell.
The statement read:
“Unfortunately, today’s press conference will no longer take place as planned as Roy Hodgson fell ill during his morning training session.” The Telegraph has since reported that Hodgson was “taken to hospital on the advice of the club’s medical staff”, who is believed to be “recovering and talking to friends and doctors”.
He is not expected to be in the dugout for Monday’s game against Everton. Hodgson’s Palace have lost 10 of their last 16 Premier League games, with the Eagles 15th in the table after losing 3-1 at home to Chelsea. The experienced manager has been criticized by fans and pundits in recent weeks, with banners appearing at Selhurst Park calling for his sacking.
Former Eintracht Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner could take over the job. The 49-year-old won the Europa League with Frankfurt in 2022, beating Rangers on penalties in the final. The Austrian has been out of work since last summer after leaving Frankfurt at the end of the 2022/23 season.
After a successful spell at Fulham, Hodgson took over as Liverpool manager in 2010 and led the club to the Europa League final. However, he only lasted half a season at Anfield as the Reds struggled in transition and was sacked by Kenny Dalglish in January 2011.
After failing at Liverpool, Hodgson revived his career at West Brom and later spent four years as England manager. He is serving his second term at Crystal Palace after being reappointed in March 2023. He is the oldest manager in Premier League history.
