Liverpool could be preparing an offer for Xabi Alonso as interest from elsewhere emerges, while one name looks to have been ruled out of the running to succeed Jürgen Klopp.
Xabi Alonso is getting a lot more attention from Liverpool fans following events over the past week. The Reds might not be the only ones interested in the former midfielder though.
The clock is ticking down on Jürgen Klopp’s time at Anfield, with the German having confirmed his decision to step aside at the end of the season. The German has three more months remaining in charge, and he could go out with a bang.
Liverpool is still in the hunt for four trophies this season, with the first piece of silverware up for grabs next weekend when the Reds take on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final. They’ll also be hoping to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League before then.
Meanwhile, Alonso continues to be the standout favorite to replace Klopp, with his Bayer Leverkusen side now five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga following last weekend’s win over Bayern Munich. With pressure growing on Thomas Tuchel though, Liverpool could be forced to move quickly — here is the latest on the Reds’ search for Klopp’s successor.
The report suggests Alonso has told those close to him that he’s interested in three or four clubs. Bayern Munich, where he also plied his trade, is also said to have him top of its list should Thomas Tuchel be sacked.
Bayern will almost certainly be interested in Alonso as well. Liverpool does have an advantage though in that it looks to be a much more stable club at the moment, so that should hopefully give the Reds an edge if a battle for the Spaniard emerge.
