Darwin Nunez has responded to a video that has gone viral featuring his celebration during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final win.
The Reds recorded a 1-0 victory after extra time over Chelsea to win a record tenth League Cup in the club’s history. Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal from a Kostas Tsimikas corner in the 118th minute to win the trophy for Liverpool.
Nunez was among a group of 11 first-team players who missed the final for Liverpool due to injury. He was joined by Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker, Dominik Szoboszlai, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak in being on the sidelines.
Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo were added to Liverpool’s injury list during the final. The midfield duo suffered ankle injuries during the game, with both players spotted leaving Wembley Stadium on crutches while wearing a protective boot.
After Van Dijk scored what proved to be the winning goal, Liverpool players on the pitch and the bench erupted into euphoric celebrations. Nunez was alongside the likes of Salah, Jones and Szoboszlai in the stand a few rows behind the Liverpool bench while the game was being played.
A video has gone viral which showed Nunez running from his seat down the steps and leaping over the advertising barriers to celebrate Van Dijk’s goal on the touchline. Nunez was joined by Szoboszlai in leaping over the barriers to celebrate with the Liverpool staff and his teammates.
Nunez posted the video on his Instagram story and included a caption to send a message about his celebration.
“I warned them that if we scored the goal I was going to jump,” wrote Nunez on Instagram, translated from Spanish.
