Mo Salah says possibly ‘even more’ than 90 per cent of his goals have one thing in common. The Liverpool forward is something special.
Mo Salah gave a great interview to Premier League Productions this week where he discussed all sorts Liverpool. One particularly interesting question was whether he visualises goals in his head before games.
“Yeah, 90 per cent of my goals were like this,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “Even more.
“You just visualise what you want to happen, and you keep repeating it. Sometimes it doesn’t work, sometimes it works.”
Salah then went on to explain how he deliberately focuses on training mentally and wishes he could go back to tell his younger self to do so. This, he believes, makes a difference at 15 minutes a day.
“To work mentally is much more difficult than your work physically,” he said. “I work in the gym almost every day for an hour and a half.
“Most of the time I go home and I work again, but it’s so hard to keep working on mental things. [Doing] 15 minutes every day, it’s so hard.”
It’s hard to imagine Salah visualising some of his goals – a few of the mazier ones feel like pure instinct rather than an actual plan – but it appears that the vast majority we’ve witnessed were ‘planned’. Of course, the Egyptian deliberately tries to do the same thing in games by cutting in off the flank on his left foot.
And so that classic Salah goal, drifting into the box from the right to finish in either corner is very much planned. It’s another sign of just how hard he works on improving himself – be it in the gym or through mental preparation.
There aren’t many, if any, around like Salah. Hopefully, he sticks around and continues to improve for a few more years yet.
