Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool took on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.
Liverpool and Manchester City are competing for the Premier League title this season, just like Arsenal are.
Darwin Nunez has become an important source of goals for Liverpool in recent weeks and is in form at the moment.
So, it did not come as a surprise to me at all to see Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp include the 24-year-old striker in the starting lineup against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
Nunez was deployed down the middle in a three-man attack. Klopp decided to take off the Uruguay international striker on 76 minutes. Cody Gakpo came on in his place.
Pat Nevin comments on Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez vs Manchester City
Former Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin was following the match for BBC Radio 5 Live, and he noted that Nunez was not happy when he was taken off.
During his time on the pitch at Anfield against City, Nunez took two shots of which one was on target, had a pass accuracy of 66.7%, won five headers, took 23 touches, and made one clearance.
Nevin said about Nunez on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Nunez went ‘What me, you are taking me off?’ just now.
“He desperately wanted to stay on but what player wouldn’t want to stay on in a game like this. It has been so fascinating to watch.”
Important point for Liverpool
While Liverpool will be disappointed that they could not win against Manchester City, I have to say that it is a big point for the Reds.
A defeat to City at Anfield would have been damaging. A point against the defending Premier League champions is not a bad result at all.
The Premier League title race is still finely poised. Arsenal and Liverpool are first and second respectively with 64 points. City are third with 63 points.
I think that the Premier League title race this season will go down to the write.
