Liverpool fans love Jurgen Klopp’s sarcastic dig at Mike Dean after penalty controversy

Liverpool fans couldn’t help but laugh when Jurgen Klopp appeared to sarcastically praise former referee Mike Dean.

 

The Reds were denied a late penalty in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City after Jeremy Doku caught Alexis Mac Allister with a high boot.

VAR reviewed the incident but agreed with referee Michael Oliver’s on-field decision of no penalty, with Liverpool settling for the draw.

 

Former official Dean was on commentary for Sky Sports and said it could be a penalty, calling Doku ‘very, very fortunate’.

However, Klopp seemed to sarcastically applaud his role with the broadcaster and hinted he would find a way to not award it. 

During his post-match interview with Sky Sports, the Liverpool boss said it was ‘100 per cent’ a foul and Doku should have been booked.

Klopp then added: “You will find people… I think, did you employ Mike Dean, is he working for Sky? Congratulations, that’s a great appointment by the way.

 

“He will find something, and all the others as well. It’s a penalty, for all football people on the planet it’s penalty. If you think it’s not one, then maybe you are not a football person.”

Liverpool fans on social media loved his apparent jibe at Dean, with one on X saying: “Shots fired.” 

“Klopp’s I Don’t Give A F*** Farewell Tour continues to be endlessly entertaining. Casually two foots Mike Dean here just because he can,” added a second.

A third said: “This absolutely killed me. Klopp sticking it on Mike Dean.” 

“Klopp firing shots at Mike Dean too, I thought I couldn’t love the guy anymore than I already did,” added a fourth. 

City took the lead at Anfield when John Stones scored from close-range following a clever delivery on a corner from the right by Kevin De Bruyne.

Liverpool equalised through a Mac Allister penalty after a foul on Darwin Nunez from Ederson, who was substituted due to injury from the collision.

The penalty cries came deep into stoppage-time, with the Reds failing to make the most of the subsequent corner. 

 

Klopp’s side are level with Arsenal at the top of the table but below them only on goal difference, with City behind in third by one point.
