Liverpool went an early rampage against Sparta Prague in the Europa League, scoring four goals in just 14 minutes despite already leading the tie 5-1.
Liverpool scored four goals in the first 14 minutes against Sparta Prague – leaving fans stunned at the early demolition job.
The Reds led 5-1 from the first leg in the Czech Republic with the reverse fixture at Anfield on Thursday (March 14) effectively becoming a dead rubber game. Despite this, Jurgen Klopp fielded a strong line-up with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai all starting.
Even with the quality on the pitch, fans certainly didn’t expect the massacre Liverpool would produce with four goals in just 14 minutes to lead 9-1 on aggregate – with Sparta getting one back before half-time.
Nunez opened the scoring within seven minutes and just a minute later, Bobby Clark scored his first goal for the club with a cool finish past Peter Jensen.
Spurred on by the Anfield crowd, Liverpool hunted for a third and got it through Mohamed Salah who became the first Reds player to score 20 goals in seven consecutive seasons.
Cody Gakpo then ended his recent goal drought four minutes later to complete the destruction of Sparta Prague within 14 minutes as one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote: “Nah this is a training session” in response to the pure domination showed by the Premier League side.
Another fan added: “MASSACRE IN ANFIELD” while a third commented: “Liverpool isn’t slowing down!”. A fourth wrote that Liverpool are essentially showing no mercy as they said: “I love what I’m seeing right now from Liverpool. They are giving it to them the way they like”.
Szoboszlai and Gakpo added the fifth and sixth of the night after the restart to make it a staggering 11-2 on aggregate as they cruised to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Liverpool began the competition as overwhelming favourites and the performance against the Czech champions will only better those odds. Klopp’s side have been in fine form as of late with one trophy already under their belt as they remain in the hunt of a historic quadruple.
They sit second in the league, with only goal difference separating them and Arsenal, while an FA Cup quarter-final clash against Manchester United awaits them on Sunday (March 17).
