Alan Smith proves Liverpool supporters right over Arsenal penalty decision

The Reds are not in Premier League action until Sunday when they travel to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. Before then, Liverpool’s title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City will have already played.

City claimed a 4-2 win over Crystal Palace in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, while Arsenal were on the road against Brighton a few hours later.

 

The Gunners took the lead at the Amex Stadium through a Bukayo Saka penalty. Arsenal were awarded the spot-kick after Tariq Lamptey fouled Gabriel Jesus on the edge of the penalty area.

Referee John Brooks pointed to the spot for a penalty, and the decision was checked by Robert Jones on VAR before being swiftly confirmed. Saka converted the penalty to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead going into half-time.

 

The decision has led to numerous Liverpool fans expressing their frustrations on social media. Many pointed out the decision not to award Liverpool a penalty after Alexis Mac Allister appeared to be fouled by Jeremy Doku during last month’s draw with Man City at Anfield.

And former Arsenal striker Alan Smith was on commentary duty for the Gunners’ clash against Brighton. Smith explained why he believes VAR were right not to overturn the original decision and award a penalty for Arsenal.

Doku also got some connection on the ball – but Liverpool argued they still should have been awarded a penalty because of the height of the challenge and the impact on Mac Allister.
