Atalanta’s Marten de Roon posts joke involving Virgil van Dijk after thrashing Liverpool last night

Liverpool are today having to deal with the fall-out from a disastrous performance against Atalanta last night.

The Reds put in a truly dismal display at Anfield. In what could now go down as Jurgen Klopp’s final European home game with the club, Liverpool simply wilted.

Atalanta were far better on the night and deserved their 3-0 win. And despite Gian Piero Gasperini’s praise of the Reds after the match, there wasn’t much good to say about Liverpool.

Even the Anfield crowd could see that there was only one team that really turned up on Thursday night. With Atalanta’s players celebrating in front of them, the Liverpool fans reportedly applauded the team who had bettered them.

Indeed, La Dea’s supporters and their heroes seriously enjoyed their visit to Anfield. And the celebrations continued on social media after the game.

Marten de Roon is well known for his witty posts on social media. The Dutch midfielder can often be seen posting self-deprecating comments or quips about good results.

So, it shouldn’t have been a surprise to see him sharing a joke about last night’s win, in what was perhaps the best result in Atalanta’s history

Captaining the side last night, De Roon swapped pendants with his Netherlands national team colleague Virgil van Dijk before the match.

And taking to X once the celebrations had died down, the 33-year-old posted a video of that moment.

As De Roon and Van Dijk hug it out, the Atalanta man inserted a speech bubble above Virgil’s head reading ‘If we win don’t tackle me when we’re with national squad.’ Perhaps the Liverpool captain really said this, or perhaps it’s simply a light-hearted take from De Roon in the after-glow of victory. Either way, we’re not laughing.

What an insane night.

Who is Marten de Roon

English football fans may remember De Roon from his spell in the Premier League with Middlesbrough back in 2016/17.

Having actually arrived from Atalanta, the Dutchman spent just one year at the Riverside before heading back to Bergamo.

Since then, De Roon has been the heartbeat of a side used to upsetting the odds under Gasperini. Having played over 300 times for La Dea, he’s something of a legend there. De Roon also has 42 caps for the Netherlands, hence his familiarity with Van Dijk.

Given the Liverpool captain’s easy-going nature, we don’t see this being a problem between the pair. Although Virgil might well be more minded to leave one on De Roon during the next international camp.
