Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes there is a real chance that Mo Salah leaves Anfield this summer.
The Egyptian’s future has come under a microscope since his tense conflict with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline this past weekend. The pair argued as Salah prepared to be substituted on at the London Stadium with Liverpool only earning a draw as their title chances crumbled.
The former Roma star suggested there would be ‘fire’ if he spoke to reporters following the incident. Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season and is set to replaced by Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, but Salah’s actions have left many questioning his attitude.
The 31-year-old, who has scored 210 goals and made 88 assists in 346 Liverpool appearances, is set to enter the final year of his contract. The Reds rejected a £150million offer from the Saudi Pro League ahead of the current season, but both parties would appear to have a decision to make should such interest return.
Souness believes that last summer, an agreement could have been made to convince Salah to remain at Anfield for one more year before saying goodbye to the club. The former Newcastle boss reckons the ace’s interest has been captured.
“I think there’s a real chance,” Souness said on talkSPORT. “There’s every chance that he’s done a deal with Liverpool last summer, with all the interest from Saudi Arabia, to give them another year. It’s a bit like Ronaldo at Man United; he gave them another year and then went off to Real Madrid.
“I think there’s every possibility that is the case. He’s been marvellous for Liverpool, but I think he’s had his head turned. He’s going back to his mother tongue, so at his age and with everything else, I think there’s every chance that will happen [transfer to Saudi Arabia].”
