Pat Nevin makes Andy Robertson and Arne Slot claim after quiet season showing

Euro 2024: The former Chelsea forward is unsure over the Liverpool star’s role next season.

Pat Nevin has claimed he’s unsure what role Andy Robertson will play under new manager Arne Slot at Liverpool next season.

Following Jurgen Klopp’s exit, it will be a new era for Liverpool as they welcome the ex-Feyenoord manager. He will have plenty of questions to answer including whether Robertson will be the trusted number one option at left-back. Injuries derailed his campaign and Joe Gomez was tasked with deputising in his absence, offering a more controlled and defensive profile.

In years gone by, Robertson was one of the key names on the teamsheet but, now aged 30, his best years could be behind him. He managed just two assists last season and his attacking influence has certainly come into question and Nevin revealed he’s not entirely sure what kind of role Robertson will play in Slot’s team as a result. Nevin said: “Under Arne Slot, I’m not sure how he’ll play, as there will be changes. I don’t know exactly what will be expected of Robertson. “Liverpool were a different team last season and Robbo didn’t create as many chances as he did in previous seasons – that’s not a weakness, just a change in style. There was no way he was going to create as many chances with the way they played, they had to adapt to the personnel. I’d always have Robertson in my team if I was a Liverpool manager.”

Euro 2024 will give Robertson the chance to hit back at any critics but his side face an extremely tough group as Germany, Switzerland and Hungary await them. The Liverpool defender will play a key role and he recently starred in their last friendly before the competition as he was involved in both of his side’s goals in a 2-2 draw with Finland.

The future of back-up left-back Kostas Tsimikas is also uncertain after he failed to make an impact this season due to poor form and injuries. Gomez’s emergence at left-back showed that the Greece international may not be required and he could source first-team football elsewhere. As it stands, we will simply have to wait for pre-season for Slot to analyse his squad further.
