Legendary footballer and broadcaster Gary Lineker has sparked controversy by suggesting Liverpool winger, Mohamed Salah, should consider joining La Liga giants Barcelona. Lineker’s comments have ignited debate among Reds fans and pundits.
Lineker, a longtime admirer of Salah’s talents, believes the Egyptian superstar would thrive at Barcelona. “Salah would be an excellent fit for Barcelona. His skillset suits their style,” Lineker stated on BBC’s Match of the Day.
The 32-year-old Salah has consistently impressed at Liverpool, scoring 186 goals in 293 appearances. However, Lineker’s comments imply Salah’s growth might be stifled at Anfield.
“Salah deserves to play for a team that dominates possession. Barcelona’s philosophy would bring out the best in him,” Lineker argued.
Barcelona’s recent resurgence under Xavi Hernandez has made them an attractive destination. The Catalan giants boast an impressive squad, with Pedri, Ansu Fati and Robert Lewandowski.
Liverpool fans have reacted strongly, dismissing Lineker’s suggestion. “Salah is integral to our success. He won’t leave,” tweeted @LFC_Fanzone.
Reds legend, Jamie Carragher, countered Lineker’s views: “Salah’s loyalty and commitment to Liverpool are unwavering. He’s not going anywhere.”
Salah’s contract, expiring in 2025, has sparked speculation. Liverpool is reportedly working on an extension.
