Premier League legends Alan Shearer and Ian Wright were left utterly impressed by Mohamed Salah’s masterclass as the Egyptian ace secured a pivotal win for Liverpool against Brighton. Salah’s sublime strike, following Cody Gakpo’s equalizer, catapulted Liverpool to the summit of the Premier League at Anfield.
Salah’s goal was his 164th in the Premier League, nudging him past Anfield icon Robbie Fowler into eighth on the all-time scorers list, though he’s still some way behind Shearer’s tally. Shearer, the former England skipper, couldn’t hide his admiration for Salah’s prowess, and Wright was quick to echo the sentiment as they lauded his performance post-match on Match of the Day.
Shearer remarked: “We expected Liverpool to pick up because we knew what Arne Slot would be saying at half-time. Gakpo said about picking up the energy and that’s exactly what they did. Then all of a sudden, you’re thinking Liverpool are going to win this.
There’s not many people, if any, better than (Salah) in that position where he wants to get it onto his left foot. It’s alright saying you can’t let him; it’s another actually stopping him. Once he gets in that position, you know you’re in desperate trouble.
It’s unbelievable. How many times have we seen him do it? He’s a great player, whatever happens with his contract, he’s incredible, world class and I love watching him.”
Arsenal icon Wright also hailed Salah’s impact on the match, while noting that Liverpool’s comeback win underscored its championship mettle. He commented: “In the end, Liverpool, with the quality that they’ve got, finished them off. But it was a really good performance from Brighton
Liverpool are showing exactly what you need to do. It’s really difficult to keep Liverpool off you when they are shooting into the Kop. It was a quiet game for Mohamed Salah, but then, just like he did at Arsenal, if you get him in this situation, you cannot let him come inside. It’s very easy to say, but it’s very difficult to stop.
