Bruno Guimarães Calls Newcastle’s Season “Very Disappointing” After Brentford Loss

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães offered a scathing assessment of the team’s performance following their 4-2 loss to Brentford, labeling the season so far as “very disappointing.” The defeat marked Newcastle’s fourth consecutive game without a win and their fifth loss of the Premier League season, leaving them 12th in the standings.

A “Messy” Performance

Guimarães did not mince words, stating that Newcastle were “a mess” during the match. The chaotic nature of the game was evident early, with both teams scoring twice within the opening 32 minutes. However, the Magpies’ inability to maintain composure or rectify defensive errors proved costly.

Costly Errors

The midfielder highlighted critical mistakes, including:

  • Harvey Barnes’ Misstep: A careless pass by Barnes led directly to Yoanne Wissa’s goal, though Barnes later equalized to make amends.
  • Defensive Lapses: Brentford capitalized on a long free-kick by goalkeeper Mark Flekken, resulting in Nathan Collins’ goal.
  • Turnovers in Possession: Sandro Tonali’s turnover allowed Kevin Schade to score, further showcasing Newcastle’s vulnerability in transitions.

Reflection on the Season

Guimarães expressed frustration at the team’s lack of consistency and accountability. “We have no excuse for the way we’ve been playing,” he admitted. The midfielder’s remarks echo growing concerns about Newcastle’s failure to build momentum after promising performances earlier in the season.

The Road Ahead

With Newcastle now winless in four games, their struggles are raising questions about their ability to contend for European qualification, let alone challenge the Premier League elite.

Manager Eddie Howe faces mounting pressure to address the team’s defensive weaknesses and restore the unity and intensity that defined their rise in previous seasons. As Guimarães put it, “We need to fix this quickly—this is not who we are.”
