The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Monday that outside linebacker T.J. Watt underwent surgery to repair a minor injury. The procedure was performed by team physicians, and Watt is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp.
According to sources, Watt suffered the injury during the Steelers’ final game of the 2023 season. Despite the injury, Watt played through the pain and finished the game with two sacks.
The surgery was deemed necessary to ensure Watt’s long-term health and prevent any further complications. The Steelers’ medical staff has been working closely with Watt to develop a rehabilitation plan, and he is expected to be fully cleared for participation in training camp.
“We’re confident that T.J. will make a full recovery and be ready to go for training camp,” said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. “He’s a tough guy who plays through pain, but we want to make sure he’s 100% healthy before we put him back on the field.”
Watt, who was drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, has developed into one of the top outside linebackers in the league. He has recorded 34.5 sacks in his first five seasons, including a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2020.
The Steelers are counting on Watt to be a key contributor to their defense in 2024. With Watt’s expected return to full health, the Steelers’ pass rush is expected to be one of the strongest in the league.
“T.J. is a game-changer,” said Steelers defensive coordinator Brian Flores. “He’s a guy who can take over a game and make plays that change the outcome. We’re excited to have him back on the field and leading our defense.”
Watt’s surgery and subsequent rehabilitation are just the latest examples of the Steelers’ commitment to player health and safety. The team has invested heavily in its medical staff and facilities, and has implemented a number of initiatives designed to reduce injuries and improve player well-being.
“We’re committed to doing everything we can to keep our players healthy and safe,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “T.J.’s surgery is just one example of that commitment. We’re looking forward to having him back on the field and competing at a high level.”
With Watt’s expected return to full health, the Steelers are poised to make a deep run in the playoffs in 2024. The team’s defense is expected to be one of the strongest in the league, and Watt’s presence will be a key factor in that success.
